UK Coast to Coast Walk

  • June 2015

  • Roy and Doreen returned to the UK as often as they were able.  They hoped to travel the length and breadth of the country as they felt there was so much they had not seen.  Sadly Doreen's health did not permit them to make this dream a reality.  It is therefore fitting that the Coast to Coast walk reflects, in a way, the dreams that Roy and Doreen had. However, Roy will not undertake the whole of this walk alone.  The Coast to Coast (C2C) was devised by Alfred Wainwright known affectionately as AW in 1973 and is a route that takes you from St. Bees on the North Eastern coast of Cumbria on the Irish sea to Robin Hoods Bay on the coast of the North sea which is situated in North Eastern Yorkshire. The distance has traditionally been quoted as 192 miles (307 km) and due to recent re- measurings the distance has been calculated at closer to 220 miles (352 km). It passes through 3 national parks however it is not considered a "walk in the park". It passes through some rugged terrain and very inclement weather, so much so that it is often necessary to hunker down especially when the heavy mists prevail. At each end of the walk you are treated to some breathtaking scenary. For the purpose of the fund raiser I will be using the traditional distance of 307 kilometres.

Pyrenees Pilgrimage Walk

  • Spring/Summer 2016

  • The Camino de Santiago is a journey, which has the potential to present something completely new every day. The journey/pilgrimage can be started from four recognised places. Roy will be starting and ending in Spain for a total of 800 kilometres. Among his challenges will be securing accommodation which will necessitate having to start his days hike at 6:30 am in the dark (sunrise is 7-8 am), temperatures will range from 0 to 30 degrees celsius (depending on the elevation). It will be a compelling journey of that he has no doubt he will be meeting people of different cultures and languages (Roy will be immersed in Spanish lessons 6 months prior to his arrival). A journey which is named after St James in the name of his own Saint "My Angel Doreen Clements" in which we hope to raise funds for Langley Hospice so that they may increase the accommodation to the residents of Langley.
